I seek to render in a single image the visual experience in which, when seeing with both eyes, anything beyond the point of focus appears as a double image.
“Double Eyes” Perspective on translucence
The idea for this project is based on perceptual experiences such as the following: when observing a rectangular solid at very close range with both eyes, even when facing it directly, the left and right side surfaces are perceived simultaneously; or when viewing two rectangular solids aligned in a single row in depth, focusing on the nearer one causes the farther object to appear split laterally, protruding from either side of the object in front. Because these laterally separated forms appear translucent, I chose the term “translucent” to describe this perspective. Both are spatial experiences unique to binocular vision, and this project began as an attempt to explore what might occur if such experiences were translated into a system of pictorial construction. I prepare rectangular solids and consider these phenomena while practically confirming how they are perceived.
My long-standing interest in distance and vision has deepened further and developed into this line of inquiry. This year, there are various aspects of this perspective that I would like to examine, and I plan to continue my research, including its theoretical formulation.
